Ladies 3rds Vs Woodlands 28/3/09 - Away
A nice relaxed Saturday afternoon away game, the weather was somewhat inclement but the turnout was good! Not only did we have Gill who kindly took up Dan’s position for the afternoon but we also welcomed Heather Neilson in the left forward position. A pre-match natter with our stand-in coach Gill warned us of an umpire known for dodgy calls and penchant for carding!
We drew against Woodlands the last time we played them, we were equally matched and we started well. We had some strong runs down the right thanks to Whippet and when on the left Heather N. proved a formidable winger. Both sides had equal opportunities in their respective D’s with the majority of the play in the midfield.
Don’t get me wrong it was hard work and we were glad to have subs! Woodlands had a fair few youngsters with the energy of ten Duracell bunnies but they were like hamsters on a wheel, their little legs were moving into a blur but they were struggling to get anywhere! A strong Asterdale defence held them at bay, that was of course until they scored! 25 minutes in and you could barely call it a goal, a scramble in our D saw goalie Charlotte floored and ball gently roll past her and over the goal line. Woodlands looked at each other in happy confusion as no one knew who’d had the final touch.
The second half saw a more focused and determined Asterdale side, the strong runs kept the pressure on, a great run by Whippet down the right wing culminating in a belting strike across the field into the D, met by Nathalie’s well positioned stick sweeping across towards the left post. Such a great shame it was the wrong side of post. Not to be disheartened Asterdale battled on! Both teams were getting tired, even the little hamsters were struggling! The full time whistle blew and the thirds had to settle for a one nil loss.
Our thanks go to Gill for her support and coaching, to Annie for captaining and Woodlands for a fair and well fought match.
This weeks man of the match was Sam for some slinky well time tackles and defensive manoeuvres!
The Donkey award goes to Nathalie for her superior collision with our goalie Charlotte, taking our own goalie out while the opposition is on the attack isn’t one of our best defensive tactics!
We have a special and newly named award this week, it’s called the ‘Annie’ award and it’s for a very special talent.....being loud! A woodlands player actually asked their umpire to card our Annie for being TOO loud! Thankfully the dodgy Woodlands Umpire kept his cards in his pocket! As for Annie we wouldn’t want you any other way!!

Dedicated Angie
Wow Angie, a midnight posting. That's proper dedication.
Thanks for mentioning my personal achievement, I loved it.
Thanks also to Dave Ellis for umpiring.
But but but, Gill's pre-match warning was because apparently once upon a time our Gill herself was sent off... C'mon Gill tell us what happened.
