Derby stay 2nd after 3-1 win v Matlock ----- Stunning -----
So …..
The end of the day approached, the cold and the fog began to settle in as the temperature fell, but the fire in the Derby bellies today would see us play the best game of the season so far.
Right from the off we pressed the Matlock back line forcing turnover after turnover with our midfield rampant.
On 16 mins Matlock had a 16-yard hit out. The press set itself and following a “Nowhere to go hopeful crash up field” Kath read it beautifully, intercepting the ball and with great calmness played a stunning though ball to Rachael who stormed forward in to a 1 on 1 with the keeper. As she began to draw the keeper out, a superb off the ball run from Taran to support her strike partner saw her drive off Rachaels right shoulder and in an act of incredible team play and unselfishness, Rachael slipped the ball around the keeper to Taran who calmly slammed the ball home.
A quite stunning goal.
Derby 1 – 0 Matlock
For the remainder of the ½ we continually snuffed out Matlocks attacks with Skipper Marie in absolute majestic form. We passed the ball with what appeared to be ease from back to front, but this only comes with hard work and team understanding, something that was evident in abundance today.
So ½ time and the now infamous BELCH was heard from Rachael “AH THAT’S BETTER” Whittaker to roars of laughter. But back to work as we still had a game to win and 1-0 certainly was not going to be enough.
The 2nd ½ started as the 1st had left off with Derby in command of the pitch. On 45 mins we won our first corner of the match and following Helena’s Training session on Tuesday the new routine was to be put into play.
The injection came out and a quite superb strike from Becky beat everyone but the post! As the ooowwws were shouted out we failed to see the ball had spun out to Beth at the top of the ‘D’. Beth took her chance and drove the ball at goal, the keeper somehow got a touch to the ball and in what seemed like an age the ball looped high towards the goal and eventually came down inside the net to see Beth and the team celebrate our now 2-0 lead.
With us now in total control of proceedings our flowing passing game continued to cause Matlock all sorts of problems, and on 52 mins again our pressure won another corner.
This time again the keeper got her body in the way of the ball but it eventually broke out to Kelly who dragged the ball high into the Matlock net to secure victory with Derby now leading 3-0.
With just 3 mins to go Matlock did score a consolation goal but it was just that, a consolation.
As the clock ran out the 3 points were in the bag AGAIN.
Derby 3-1 Matlock

You always hope for games in a season where it all clicks and today for huge portions it did just that.
We got our tactics right, we got our passing right, we got our corners right, we got it all right. Marie was absolutely stunning today, but there were others deserving of mention:
Rachael and Taran. Just awesome in spells
Lisa: Some fantastic clearances
Becky: Getting better every week, just brilliant today
I could seriously go on and on.
Great great game allround, so happy with the squad today now lets take this into our final game next week away at Belper.
