Evening all,

Firstly may I apologise for my tardiness in posting this week, I’m just up to my eyes in work right now, what with training my new manager in Guildford and unfortunately we’ve had some bad news with Andreas mum falling very ill it’s been another tough week in the Taylor household.

But over to last weekend’s terrific performance.

Yes unfortunately we lost again but as one of our players put it “we finally got the monkey off our backs” we played good hockey and as per the reverse fixture earlier in the season we could have come away with certainly a share of the points.

As Barton reported “The narrow victory was a repeat of the score-line in the reverse fixture and the game was every bit as competitive”

Barton certainly started the stronger and but for a string of fantastic saves from Lisa they could have been away and gone inside 15 mins but Lisa is now back to almost full fitness and she proved just what an astounding keeper she is.

At the other end Taran and the “SUBDUED” Rachael were causing the Barton defence problems of their own but not really forcing the Barton keeper into that final phase action, but their time would come.

The revised formation was working well and at times the midfield seemed almost impenetrable but Barton were certainly on top.

½ time 0-0

We spoke at the ½ about carrying on with the passion and control we had shown in the 1st half and we came out with an absolute bang.

Again from Bartons match report “The game restarted and Barton found themselves under pressure from a resurgent home side. Connie Wain, in the Barton goal was called into action for the first time in the match early into the second half and her day was only to get busier”

And so it was as on 38 mins we won our 1st Corner of the ½. The call for “ELVIS” was given from the bench and a perfectly executed routine saw Rachael smash home the 1st goal of the match and to be fair we did rather celebrate.

But Barton aren’t top of the table and unbeaten for nothing……

Kind words from their match report again as they admitted “Barton clawed their way back into the game”

And it was a fluke goal that brought the scores level as a speculative strike at goal from a short appeared to be going well wide, but an unfortunate deflection from an unsighted Amanda saw the ball drift inside the post for 1-1 after 42 mins.

Just 3 mins later again Barton scored from another well worked goal, a thunderous strike from the top D which flew under Lisa, no chance really and Barton were now sensing blood at 2-1 up.

We did everything to get back into the match and forced the Barton keeper into saves that we thought only our Lisa could do, Bex was terrific down the left flank and caused the Barton defence total unrest every time she drove out from midfield.

But disaster struck as on 54 mins Barton broke out from defence superbly and a great move through midfield saw the forward win a corner which was expertly despatched at the near post to give them a 3-1 lead.

Another excerpt from Bartons match report: “A two goal cushion was a welcome relief for Barton but it did not last long as the home side fought back and grabbed a goal at the back post to make an uncomfortable last ten minutes” Yes it was ! and following a slick move around the top of the D and a beautiful slipped pass from Kath it was left to Rachael at the far post to slot home a good looking goal to bring it back to 3-2 on 52 mins. What a cracking game.

As much as we tried though we just couldn’t find a way through the Barton defence to get the draw and time ran out with the final score DERBY 2 : BARTON 3.

Coaches Notes:

It’s been a tough time recently but today we began to show that we are not about to roll over and surrender our Midlands place.

Our new line up worked very well, there wasn’t 1 player that didn’t give 100% and everyone did their job fantastically.

Barton are a great team and deserve to get the promotion that seems almost inevitable now but they will remember our matches as the 2 hardest of their campaign. On behalf of the Ladies 1st XI we wish you good luck for next season.

Back to us…….

Despite everything including some "off field antics from outside the squad" the team spirit is there for all to see and I am a great believer in through adversity comes strength, our last few weeks have tested that resolve but we have come through it with our heads held high.

It appears that every week something happens to disrupt the flow of the team, but we just keep rising above any outside disruptions and carry on just doing our thing as a group of players that act as a single entity and yes our strength is our unity.

Great performance girls now let’s look forward to preparing for our next match at Home to Kettering on the 12th, a game which sees it hit a great milestone of 50 consecutive matches in Midlands Hockey.

Training on Tuesday is key and for once I MUST INSIST that the 1st XI squad attend in full. This is a key game that will require careful and meticulous preparation and the only way we can do this is by training as a full team. We have the pitch from 7pm to 9:30pm, let’s have everyone there warmed up ready to go by 7:30pm at the latest.

Come on ladies, this is our time now to show just what we are capable of doing.
