Mens 3rds vs Leicester Westleigh, 01/11/2008
Yet another possible win slipped from Derby's grasp yesterday in what turned out to be a horrendously acrymonious fixture. The scoring almost started when our goalie Seb Flint was pushed over the line by the opposition whilst a ball was caught in his pads. Fortunately only a short corner was awarded. However at half time Westleigh were 2-1 up from some well worked short corners and the odd shoulder barge that went un-noticed.
Going into the second half Derby managed to hold on for a long period but unfortunately at times the Westleigh attackers were a bit too skillfull and unfortunately the odd late tackle went in. What proceeded was totally unacceptable from the Westleigh team. In one event Sam Taylor made a well timed jab tackle only for the opposition player to trip over Sam, jump up and put 17 year old Sam in a headlock. The umpires decision was that as Sam had dropped his stick he deamed Sam was about to hit the player and therefore gave him a warning. The opposition player walked off without even a warning.
After that the rest of the match was a bad tempered affair. Westleigh walked away 3-1 winners, although to be fair that was more from well worked short corner routines which has to be top of our teams agenda in coming weeks.
Man of the match this week goes to Seb Flint for some seriously good saves, many a time coming out of his goal mouth to take the player on one on one. Olly Halford who played in his first match for the thirds looked amazingly composed under such difficult circumstances. I'd also like to thank Ben Taylor who made some great passes during the match and scored out one goal.
Next week is a friendly vs Melton Mowbry at 12pm at Wilsthorpe.
