Andy was so hungover from our social night, I have taken on the job of writing up the match report for this week.

Writing match reports is always hard especially when you know the result doesn’t reflect the way the team played and the questionable umpiring that has left the squad dumbfounded.

We were looking to positively bounce back from our last league defeat to Barton and put the practices we learnt in training into the game. From the start of the whistle we looked positive and playing some good passing hockey and applying some very early pressure to Kettering. We applied pressure very well from the start and successfully stopped Kettering playing their game creating turnovers in our favour. Pressure was applied from both wings and Kettering couldn’t deal with the pace of Becky and Ali from the outset. This pressure resulted in our first penalty corner which was saved well by the Kettering goalkeeper who showed us very early on she was a quality keeper and overall their best player.

Several short corners ensued and still unbelievably we couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net regardless of whoever was shooting. Our ball turnover rate was high with constant pressure from Kelly and Laura in the middle of the park. Both not giving the Kettering player’s time on the ball and enforcing Derby retained high rate of possession. Kettering did in the first half have two or three chances-two one on ones that Lisa reacted to like a lightning bolt and another a double save totally snuffing out the Kettering attackers.

The umpiring started to get interesting when the Matlock umpire couldn’t tell a stick tackle from a clean tackle and during the first half it must have sounded like someone was attempting to fell some trees! This set the precedent for the physical side of the game to come up a level. It started from this point for things to get a bit rough especially when Helena was told to get up when it was obvious she had been tripped blatantly. Again we were the better side and despite several more short corners the ball couldn’t find the net and the half time whistle blew

½ time

We felt at the ½ that we could beat Kettering and just had to keep going at them despite debatable decisions from one side of the pitch.

The ½ started OK with the midfield and forwards again creating a couple of early opportunities but with no rewards from well taken shots or short corners. The Kettering defence took a bombardment from us but we still couldn’t find a way through but again their keeper kept them in it time and time again.

Against the run of play Kettering broke through and the ball eventually found one of their attackers who drilled it despite being lifted and unfortunately caught my foot who must learn to jump higher and went at a perfect 90 degree angle to the Kettering striker who dispatched a hard and well taken shot into the back of the net.

We did not panic, we did come back very strong though and won more short corners had a clear stroke request turned down by the Kettering umpire when it hit the Kettering defender’s foot on the line. This started to un-edge us slightly and decisions for bad tackling and blatant body checking on Taran were left unpunished. We then threw everything at them but chance after chance went begging as Kettering certainly rode their luck. The clock was beginning to count down and thankfully we won a short corner. Becky pulled out with precision and the ball was sent from Marie to Amanda who took a hard shot which went into a crowd of players, which Taran was the first to react too and made it 1-1. Then the final whistle blew.

Overall this result didn’t reflect how we played or the chances we had but at the end of the day we will take what we have learnt from this match and take it into the next.

Player of the match - Lisa Richardson (2nd Game Running!)

See you all Tuesday Very Happy

Good report mate, especially with a hang over.

Well played everyone. We didn't loose our cool and continued to play some good hockey. Luck just wasn't on our side this week.

See you all Tuesday.

Morning all,

Coaches view:

I was very pleased that we took our practice session from last week and the team talk straight into the match Saturday.

The forward press looked good and the defensive transfer, show and out, was played at a very high standard.

We have played at Kettering before and the game was so similar to our previous encounter, we must have had 70% of the possession but when your opposition put 9 players inside the D and the goalkeeper has the game of her life, its always going to be hard to gain a positive result.

Due to my position on Midlands Committee I will refrain from commenting on the actions of 1 official but please be assured it will be reported in the manner that is laid down in Midlands Procedures.

To finish on a positive, we again fought through to the final whistle, we played with passion and didn’t lose our heads despite the difficult conditions. We came off knowing we had dropped 2 points, Kettering came off as though they had just won the league – testimony to how clubs are now looking at DAHC.

We all know that with a little more luck and consistency today we would have had a Penalty Stroke, Kettering could have easily been down to 9 players at 1 stage, and we would have bagged at least 5-6 goals. It was just one of those days.

The league table still looks OK though as due to Newarks surprise slip up at Northampton we still find ourselves in 2nd place just 3pts behind Barton. We are still in the hunt ladies.
