Ladies' Second Team Report 05/03/08
Burton 0 - 3 Derby Asterdale
This match was do or die! Lose and our future lay ahead of us like a bleak, badly kept, one lane farm track to nowhere. Win and we would keep alight the flame of hope and the chance to stay in the division we truly belong in.
With a treacherous start, the Derby defense did well not to concede a goal in the first half an hour after a gruelling onslaught from the Burton offense. Solid as ever Hills, Gill and Sue worked doggedly to block the dangerous strikes and Lisa, launching herself between the shots and the back of the net with nimble dexterity, kept us out of danger.
The turning point in the match was a beautifully placed goal by Sarah who worked tirelessly alongside Helena up front and we seemed to gain our composure losing the sense of panic we harboured in the earlier stages of the game.
Marie cemented our lead with a goal from a short corner and our confidence grew culminating in a great run by Gemma with a fine finish by Helena to make it 3-0.
This was a very physical game with some excellent individual contributions from Kay the unwavering, Sherridan the unremmiting and Lynn the unfaltering. A massive thank you to Marie as well who, even though this was her second match of the day, initiated and supported much of the mid field play.
Thanks also to Chris for umpiring and to our ever faithful spectators.
